THE HYPERTRAGIC NOTCH

A FAR CRY, a 20-member string orchestra, sans conductor, has created a new CD on the Crier label that includes Benjamin Britten’s brilliant homage to his composition teacher, Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge, the tongue-in-cheek world premiere arrangement by composer Ethan Wood of Mozart’s witty Ah! Vous dirais-je Maman (AKA “Twinkle, twinkle little star”) and all 20 of Prokofiev’s charmingly sarcastic Visions fugitives, 15 arranged (one marked Ridicolosamente) by Rudolf Barshai in 1960-61 for his Moscow Chamber Orchestra plus the remaining five arranged by three members of A Far Cry, those also world premieres. This earlier CD was released last fall and we reviewed their recording of piano concertos by Bach and Philip Glass in our Weekly Magazine in late May (click HERE.) They also use Kickstarter for seed money. To see how and why, click HERESM
