ORFF SCHULWERK RETURNING TO HIDDEN VALLEY

CARL OFF, (pictured), composer of the universally irresistible masterpiece Carmina Burana, also founded one of the most esteemed music education programs for children in the world. Orff Schulwerk is a dynamic approach to music and movement education created by the composer and his colleague Gunild Keetman. Proceeding from a strong conviction in each child’s natural musical promise, the Orff approach draws it forth through a child’s world of games, chant, song, movement, folk dance, drama and work on specially designed Orff instruments just right for the beginning musician. From late July into early August, Hidden Valley will host the San Francisco International Orff Course (see photo to of page). To learn more, click HERE

THE HYPERTRAGIC NOTCH

HUNGARIAN COMPOSER LEÓ WEINER is all but unknown outside and despite of his reputation in 20th century Hungarian classical music. A professor at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, he was one of four major teachers of the acclaimed international conductor Georg Solti, along with Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and Ernő Dohnányi. (Solti’s last recording, at the Budapest Festival in 1997, contains music by Bartók, Kodály and Weiner.) This new Naxos CD offers world premiere recordings of an enchanting ballet suite along with a “ballad” for clarinet and orchestra in a version that features the solo viola instead. In the scale of things, Weiner is a conservative like Dohnányi and not in the same league as either the blazingly original Bartók or the brilliant Kodály, but instead he seduces with charm and magical orchestrations. In a way, he meets the challenge of a child’s fairy tale, Csongor and Tünde in its 1959 revised version, with the same bewitched instincts as Maurice Sendak in Where the Wild Things Are. This ballet music makes me wish I were a child again, and there’s not much else these days that even comes close. The Budapest Symphony Orchestra, recorded in 2015, is conducted by Valéria Csányi (pictured) with the Jubilate Girls Choir; the solo violist is Máté Szűcs. SM
