MUSIC@MENLO, THE 17TH SEASON

TITLED “INCREDIBLE DECADES,” the annual chamber music festival in Menlo Park/Atherton opens July 12 and runs through August 3, providing the growing Monterey Bay audience for chamber music a relatively convenient way to satisfy that appetite between our local seasons. Seven pianists who specialize in chamber music join ten violinists, five violists, five cellists, two string quartets and a slew of woodwinds, brass, percussion and one singer. Individual programs focus on JS Bach, Beethoven, Schubert (Winterreise with baritone Nikolay Borchev), ‘Romantic Revolution’, ‘Moscow to Montmartre’, ‘The Roaring Twenties’ and ‘Music at the Millennium.’ As in past practice, M@M offers an eight-CD collection of recordings made during the 2018 festival, “Creative Capitals,” from JS Bach to György Ligeti. Festival co-directors David Finckel and Wu Han are well known locally for their appearances in Carmel. For the festival schedule, click HERE

DAVID ESTERLY, 1944-2019

UNIQUELY, SELF-TAUGHT CARVER and writer visited Monterey in April 2013, as part of a TED-like seminar. We had a brief but rewarding meeting at the time and a fine follow-up friendship. Sadly, he succumbed to complications of ALS. Click HERE  And HERE

THE HYPERTRAGIC NOTCH

JUST RELEASED ON CD, The Thirteenth Child offers a fabulous recording of a new opera by Danish composer Poul Ruders. And it comes with a fascinating backstory. Better still, It will make its world stage premiere at Santa Fe Opera this month in a run that begins July 27. American opera fans will be able to tell their grandchildren, “I was there.” I say grandchildren because The Thirteenth Child is based on a Brothers Grimm fairytale, The Twelve Brothers. But, as everybody knows, Grimm fairytales are all too often grim, even scary, and this opera, with a brilliant score by Ruders is no exception. Poul Ruders’ symphonic music has long been a mainstay of Bridge Records and the composer a close colleague of Becky and David Starobin who fashioned the libretto. To read more, click HERE
