MONTEREY MUSICIANS IN SAN FRANCISCO TODAY

Today at noon, four members of the Monterey Symphony Chamber Players, led by violinist Christina Mok, will make their San Francisco debut with a program of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the historic and venerable noontime concert series at Old St Mary’s Cathedral, 660 California Street, San Francisco.

ESCHER QUARTET’S THURSDAY MASTER CLASS

The public is invited to witness the Escher String Quartet conduct a master class with student musicians of Youth Music Monterey County, pursuant to their concert appearance for Chamber Music Monterey Bay on Friday. The master class, in the performing arts center at Carmel High School, is open at no charge, and begins at 7pm.

A SUDDEN SURGE IN NEW MUSIC STUDENTS

At Youth Music Monterey County’s sold-out “Solemnity & Serenity” fall concert on Sunday afternoon in Carmel, board chair Dorothy Micheletti described a surprising and challenging development. Increasing numbers of young students in the county want to play instruments and classical music. YMMC’s South County Strings program and its affiliated but independent Orchestra in the Schools program (operating in Carmel and Seaside) have seen applications double, she said. Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL) has also seen a jump in applications. The challenge is the need for greater tuition-assistance and money to acquire instruments. Currently, YMMC has two open matching grants, respectively from the Chapman Foundation and Monterey Peninsula Foundation’s Charity Match program. To help stimulate contributions for the match, violinist Eldar Hudiyev will play a benefit recital this coming Sunday at Monterey’s Wave Street Studios. See our Calendar for details.
