EINSAMKEIT

GoerneALONENESS, an important new Harmonia Mundi release of Lieder by Robert Schumann. Baritone Matthias Goerne is partnered with pianist Markus Hinterhäuser in some of the German composer’s most intimate musical settings of romantic poems by Nikolaus Lenau, Joseph von Eichendorff, Heinrich Heine, Friedrich Rückert and the overlooked Wilfried von der Neun–German texts with English translations. As the title suggests, this is music best enjoyed in solitude, with a drop of fine dry sherry, like Alfonso Oloroso imported from Jerez, or delicious port, like Ficklin Tinta shipped all the way from Madera 93637, some shelled walnuts and aged English stilton, all sins that caused the sacrifice of no animals.
